Cooking over an open fire is one of the best parts about camping. Fresh air and good food is a formula for great family fun.
Two Zone Cooking
There are two zones that campfire chefs can utilize. The first is over the flames on a grate and the second is right at the base of the campfire in the coals. The best campsite chefs will utilize both areas to create their outdoor feast.
Food Storage
One challenge that campers face is how to keep food from spoiling during extended camping trips. The best option for weekend trips is a cooler filled with plenty of ice packs. Store the cooler in a shady place and attempt to limit the number of times you open and close the cooler. Make sure to keep the cooler out of reach from animals when spending time outdoors.
Proteins
Burgers: Burger's are a classic campfire food. Burgers should be cooked about 10-15 minutes to a temperate of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Burgers should be cooked on the grate over the fire. It is always best to cook burgers to USDA recommended temperatures. Avoid flipping the burgers unnecessarily as this releases the juices, which contribute to the flavor. To add flavor consider adding a garlic powder, onion powder and salt to the ground beef.
Hot Dogs: Hot dog's are the easy and economical protein. Slice along one side of the hot dog to allow room for expansion as the hot dog cooks. Place the dogs on the grate and allow them to cook for 10 minutes. Rotate occasionally to cook evenly. For a real treat toast the buns over the open fire.
Side Items:
Corn: Lightly salt and spread butter on the corn and then place on the grill. Rotate the corn every few minutes. Corn requires a longer cook time then most proteins so it is best to put the corn on while prepping the other dinner items. Corn is done when it has turned a few shades darker then when it started.
Potatoes: Make a campfire-baked potato by placing an aluminum foil wrapped potato in the coals. Make sure to use a fork to punch holes in the potato. To create a delicious treat, apply a bit of olive oil to the potatoes skin and then salt lightly. Potatoes need a long time to cook and its best to add them to the coals and then work on prepping the other dinner items.
