Choosing Irish Black Cattle For Sale

By Georgia Diaz

Irish black cattle were introduced into the United States in the 1960's and 1970's by a genetic scholar named Maurice Boney. By mating his perfect beef females with imported Friesian sires he founded the breed. Today you can find many ranches that have Irish black cattle for sale. For his experiment he used a closed herd and qualified the genes scientifically. The breeding was controlled for over fifty years and was trademarked in 1990 to ensure the purity of the stock.

Choosing this type of animal to raise will open the door to the many advantages of their breed. The life span of the bulls and their high fertility rate is a major plus when trying to maintain herd size as well as make a profit on your investment. Purchase of a good bull for the herd will change the face value of the herd in just one year. The sires are raised with an eye to genetic purity and their strong genes dominate other breeds when mated to them. There will be few occasions when you see an unwanted throw-back trait in the calves sired.

Calves raised for their meat are said to be nearly identical in appearance. The carcass is lean and has excellent marbling leading to prime cuts of meat that is sought out for its taste and tenderness. The return on your investment makes this breed a very wise choice.

Calves are vigorous and lively when born. They arrive in the spring and the cows have a much shorter gestation period than other breeds. After only two hundred seventy seven days delivery is easy for the cows because they have been bred to have larger pelvis areas. It is very rare for them to need any help with this process.

Feed conversion is another ideal faction of this enterprise. You will find that you will spend less on feeding because their metabolism converts more feed to nutrition than the average cow. This is mainly due to the moderate size of the cow's frame. A herd of 120 half-breeds will cost the same as 100 head of any other type of steers to feed.

When considering registration of your bull you need genetic DNA proof that it comes from the initial lines created when the breed started. There are also stringent reproduction and fertility requirements that must be met prior to registration with the ACCA. The candidate may never have been shown competitively either. If your bull cannot consistently meet these standards it will be stricken from the books by the ACCA.

You can gain some privilege by joining the ACCA. Memberships can be purchased for a year, two years or a lifetime. Some benefits to a member are the right to vote on many of the rules and procedures enforced by the ACCA. You will be eligible to receive a discount if you choose to resister you bull with them and you may qualify to have access to put your bulls in the development center.

The traits that are natural to these cattle are possibly the best reasons for choosing them. Their basic standards are the reason you find so many Irish black cattle for sale in the market today. They are a solid investment for future earnings and the improvement of your existing herd.
